Nominate a Book for the Kentucky Bluegrass Award

Kentucky Bluegrass Award Master List Nomination/Selection Guidelines

  1. Books on each Master List should appeal to the intended readers of that particular list---K-2; 3-5; 6-8; 9-12.
  2. The final Master List for each category will include no more than 10 books.
  3. Books should be published within 3 years of the current KBA year. For example, 2014 Master List books should have a publication date of 2011, 2012, or 2013.
  4. Books that have previously been included on a KBA Master List are not eligible for the current list.
  5. Only the first title of a series should be considered for a Master List. Subsequent books in a series should not be considered for the Master Lists unless the book can stand alone or there are other unique circumstances.
  6. Books from a variety of genres--poetry, realistic fiction, information books, fantasy, etc.--should be included on each Master List. Picture books may appear on any Master List as long as the content is suitable and of interest to the intended readers of that particular Master List.
  7. Nominations of books by Kentucky authors and illustrators for the Master Lists are always welcome, but they must meet the guidelines like any other book nomination.
  8. All books included on the Master Lists should receive at least 2 positive reviews from standard reviewing sources such as The Horn Book, School Library Journal, etc.
  9. Books may be nominated by any adult for the KBA Master Lists. Teachers and Librarians from throughout Kentucky are particularly encouraged to nominate books. The online nomination form is available on the KBA website.
  10. Nominations for any of the Master Lists should include bibliographic information and a brief synopsis of each book:
  11. Red Sled / Patricia Thomas; Chris Demarest, ill. -- Boyds Mills Press, 2008.
"A boy and his father lift one another's spirits by going sledding on a winter's night." This is a story-poem which creates a kind of mirror image. The author was inspired to write this from her study of an ancient form of writing called chiasmus.
  12. Publishers, authors, and others are encouraged to send review copies of books they wish to nominate for the Kentucky Bluegrass Award Master Lists. Books may be sent to the appropriate Master List Chair or to the KBA Executive Director. Contact information for these individuals can be found on the KBA website.
  13. All nominations must be received by March 1 of the award year.
